The study of human history reveals a tragic pattern…. And it’s the same pattern we see in our culture today.
Even as I write, lies of the most preposterous variety are being disseminated and readily accepted by the masses. Lies about the biological-realities of gender. Lies about sexual orientation. Lies about the nature and meaning of marriage. Lies about what comprises a family. Lies about race. Lies about cultural identity. Lies about the truth of Christianity, etc., etc., etc.... There are more examples of course but these few are enough to make the point. Our modern culture offers sad but abundant evidence of man's ancient folly - namely, if a lie is dressed up in flowery jargon the gullible will pay any price to possess it. If a lie can be hailed as “fashionable” then superficial people will align themselves with it. If an age-old lie can be promoted as the “latest new thing” then the historically-ignorant all-American-consumer, desperately longing to keep up with the times will embrace it… And he’ll do so neither knowing nor caring that he has been played for a fool… A 19th Century Schoolchild's Copybook Almost 100 years ago Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem called “The God’s of the Copybook Headings” and it reads like a prophetic commentary on America’s cultural decline. It is a poem that describes man’s tragic habit of listening to “the Gods of the Market Place” who peddle age old lies, rather than heeding “the Gods of the Copybook Headings” who impart basic eternal truth. Kipling’s point is clear; the only way to free a culture from its bondage to lies is by returning to the truth. What is true at a cultural level is also true at a personal and spiritual level. Because we are fallen creatures and sinners, it is our nature to “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18). This means that we actively close our eyes to truth and embrace lies – even lies that we know are lies! There’s only one way to escape our natural bondage to lies. We must reject them and turn to the truth. How is this done? The Lord Jesus put it this way: "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32, ESV) Please take time to read Kipling’s poem – and see if you agree that it reads like a commentary on our culture. The Gods of the Copybook Headings* |
